5 labourers from Bengal die in Mizoram cave-in
In Mizoram on Monday afternoon, a quarry collapsed in, killing at least five labourers from Bengal.
Three of the dead males were from Nadia’s Tehatta, while one each was from Sandeshkhali in North 24-Parganas and Chapra in the same district.
They were Buddhadeb Mondal, 24, Madan Das, 23, Mintu Mondal, 22, Rakesh Biswas, 20, and Subrata Raftan, 24.
Seven additional people perished in the disaster, including three Assamese and two each from Mizoram and Jharkhand. The event took place at Maudarh hamlet in the Hnahthial area while they were all working on a road project.
The location is roughly 23 miles from the district headquarters and 160 km from the state capital of Aizwal. Police reported that 12 workers were buried beneath the debris, but Pintu Ghosh, 24, managed to escape unharmed. He resides in North 24-Parganas at Sandeshkhali.
Around 2 pm, loose soil started to fall while the workers were gathering stones from a quarry for the road work, and barely an hour later, the cave-in happened.
The collapse of a significant portion of the quarry may have been caused by haphazard quarrying activities upsetting the stability of the ground at the base level, according to a civil engineer with experience building roads in mountainous terrains headquartered in Calcutta.
The rescue effort started late on Monday night, and by Tuesday afternoon, five Bengali labourers’ bodies had been found.
The construction company would send the bodies to their homes after the post-mortem, Hnahthial deputy commissioner R. Lalremsanga told The Telegraph
