Mumbai | Maharashtra — In a major boost to India’s gem and jewellery trade, the Gemmological Institute of India (GII) has achieved a prestigious accreditation from the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL). The recognition, granted under ISO/IEC/17025:2017 in the field of Testing, recognises GII’s long-standing commitment to excellence in gem testing, certification, and research.
For decades, GII has been at the forefront of the Indian gem and jewellery industry, known for its rigorous testing standards, expert-led training programs, and high-end R&D initiatives. This latest accreditation validates the institute’s credibility as an internationally recognized authority in gemstone and diamond certification.
Mehul Shah, Chairman of GII, said the accreditation reflects the institute’s uncompromising pursuit of quality. “I assure the gem and jewellery trade and industry that GII will continue to provide quality certificates to its valued customers. This NABL accreditation is a recognition of our team’s dedication to precision, transparency, and integrity.”
Industry insiders believe the accreditation will enhance India’s global reputation in the gems and jewellery sector, which contributes significantly to the country’s exports. With buyers worldwide demanding stricter quality and authenticity checks, institutions like GII play a crucial role in building trust.
A Mumbai-based jeweller, Ankit Patel, praised the move: “In today’s global market, credibility matters as much as craftsmanship. When an institute like GII receives NABL accreditation, it reassures both traders and customers that the certificates they rely on meet the highest international standards.”
The accreditation is also expected to give GII-trained professionals an edge, as the institute’s certification and training programs are now further backed by globally accepted quality standards.
With the gem and jewellery industry evolving rapidly—driven by technology, ethical sourcing, and international competition—GII’s achievement is being seen as a timely milestone. It not only strengthens the institute’s position as a leader in gem testing and certification but also reaffirms India’s growing stature in the global jewellery trade.
Shah added, “Quality is not just a standard at GII—it’s our foundation.”
