July 18, 2025 — U.S. universities are grappling with a dramatic 70% decline in Indian student admissions this year, driven by ongoing visa processing challenges under the Trump administration, according to education consultants and reports. In Hyderabad, a hub for U.S.-bound students, the situation is particularly dire. “Normally, students would have completed visa interviews and be preparing to depart by now. This year, we’re stuck refreshing portals daily, hoping for slots. It’s the worst we’ve seen in years,” said Sanjeev Rai of Hyderabad Overseas Consultant, as reported by the Times of India. The U.S. Consulate General in Hyderabad promised phased visa slot releases, but delays and lack of clarity persist, leaving students in limbo. “Even those who secured slots haven’t received confirmations,” noted Ankit Jain from Window Overseas Education Consultancy.

Frustrated, many students are now eyeing alternative study destinations like Canada and Australia.A U.S. Consulate spokesperson, quoted by NDTV, emphasized enhanced vetting processes: “We’re working to ensure applicants do not intend to harm America or its interests. Applicants should apply early and expect additional processing time.” The consulate advised students to monitor the embassy website for updates on appointment availability. As the visa crisis continues, the sharp drop in Indian student enrollment threatens to reshape the landscape of U.S. higher education, long a top choice for India’s ambitious youth.
