In a surprising turn of events, the proposed ₹60 lakh renovation of Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta’s official residence at Raj Niwas Marg has been called off. The tender, issued by the Public Works Department (PWD) for the lavish makeover of Bungalow No. 1, was cancelled citing “administrative reasons,” sparking a fresh wave of political controversy in the capital.

The renovation plan included an extravagant overhaul, featuring 24 air conditioners (2-ton each), five large HD TVs, six geysers, chandeliers, extensive electrical wiring, and other decorative enhancements, with a total estimated cost of ₹59,40,170. However, the decision to scrap the tender has raised eyebrows, especially after it ignited a fiery political debate between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Congress.

The controversy erupted when news of the hefty renovation budget surfaced, prompting AAP to label the CM’s residence a “Mayamahal” (Palace of Illusion), a pointed jab referencing BJP’s earlier “Sheeshmahal” allegations against AAP during the Delhi Assembly elections. Congress leader Supriya Shrinate joined the fray, criticizing the expenditure on X, stating, “While Delhiites face bulldozers demolishing their homes, CM Rekha Gupta plans to combine two bungalows for a luxurious renovation that will leave you stunned.”The cancellation has fueled speculation about the underlying reasons, with some suggesting it was a response to the mounting political pressure and public scrutiny.

The decision comes at a time when Delhi’s political landscape is already charged, with the upcoming Bihar Elections 2025 and ongoing protests like the Bihar Bandh and Bharat Bandh dominating headlines. As the capital braces for more political sparring, the scrapped tender serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between governance and public perception. For now, CM Rekha Gupta’s bungalow will remain untouched, but the debate over extravagance in politics is far from over.*For more updates on this story and the latest in Delhi politics, download the Live Hindustan App or visit hindustantimes.com.*
