On June 18, 2025, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced that India and Canada have agreed to reinstate High Commissioners in each other’s capitals soon, marking the initial step in a series of “calibrated measures” to stabilize their “very important relationship.”
During a constructive meeting on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the significance of India-Canada ties, rooted in shared values, democracy, rule of law, and strong people-to-people connections. Misri, in a video statement, highlighted the leaders’ commitment to restoring stability through phased diplomatic actions, starting with the appointment of new High Commissioners, followed by additional steps.
The leaders agreed to resume senior-level and working-group discussions on trade, connectivity, and people-to-people ties to revitalize the relationship. They also explored collaboration in clean energy, clean technology, digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence, food security, critical minerals, and supply chains. With trade negotiations currently paused, Modi and Carney directed officials to resume talks at the earliest opportunity and committed to maintaining contact for a future meeting.
A statement from Carney’s office reaffirmed the importance of Canada-India relations, grounded in mutual respect, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the rule of law. It confirmed the agreement to designate new High Commissioners to restore regular consular services for citizens and businesses. The statement also noted discussions on historic people-to-people ties, Indo-Pacific partnerships, and commercial linkages in economic growth, supply chains, and energy transformation. Carney raised G7 priorities, including transnational crime, security, and the rules-based order, while both leaders explored deepened engagement.
