Assam: 2 people crushed to death by wild elephant in Charaideo
GUWAHATI, DEC 26: Yet another incident of human-elephant conflict, where two people trampled to death by wild elephant in Assam’s Charaideo district on Sunday.
The incident took place on December 25 night in Sonari, Charaideo.
“The wild jumbos, entered human habitation in search of food and created havoc in the area destroying two huts and killing two villagers,” said a forest official.
The deceased have been identified as Bikash Tanti and Gobind Tanti.
“We have sent the body for postmortem. The incident of human-elephant conflict has been rising in Assam. Everyday, reports of wild elephnat entering villagers and creating rampage has become common practise. We have taken all slew of mesaures to contain the human-elephant conflict,” said the forest official.
In another such incident, on December 15, three persons, including a child, were killed and two others were injured following the attack by a herd of wild elephants in Assam’s Goalpara district.
The wild tusker also damaged two vehicles.
On December 10, several houses and farming lands were destroyed by the wild elephant menace in Assam’s Berhampur in the Nagaon district.
In the past 10 years, human-elephant conflict has claimed lives of 800 people in Assam and around 250 pachyderms, according to government data. Now a new project that uses sounds that spook the elephants could be able to reduce the conflict to a large extent.
