DIBRUGARH, MAY 23: The body of IIT Kharagpur student Faizan Ahmed was exhumed at at the Amolapatty Kabarsthan (burial ground) in Dibrugarh on Tuesday.

A team of forensics experts from Assam Medical College and Directorate of Forensic Science Guwahati carried out the exhumation process.

A 2-member forensic team from the Assam Medical College and Hospital (AMCH), Dibrugarh led by Dr Renuka Rongpharpi, Head of the Department of Forensic Science together with a 4-member team from the Directorate of Forensic Science Guwahati, carried out the exhumation of Faizan Ahmed at the Amolapatty Kabarsthan (burial ground) in Dibrugarh.

A 4-member team of Bengal police from Kharagpur Town Police Station led by Inspector Biswaranjan Banerjee (Investigating Officer) are also at the spot during the exhumation process. The exhumation started at 10am and continued till 11.30am.

The body of Faizan Ahmed was exhumed in presence of family members of Faizan Ahmed, magistrate Gautam Priyam Mahanta, ASP Bitul Chetia and local police.

The body was put into a coffin and will be preserved today in a morgue and the same will be flown to Kolkata tomorrow for a second post-mortem examination.

On April 25, the Calcutta High Court had passed a rare order calling for the exhumation of the IIT Kharagpur student’s body from his burial ground to conduct a second post-mortem at the Medical College and Hospital, Calcutta, saying that it was necessary to bring out the truth behind his death.

Faizan Ahmed belonged to Assam’s Tinsukia and his body was buried at the Amolapatty Kabarshtan in Dibrugarh town on October 16, 2022.

Twenty-three-year-old Faizan Ahmed was a third-year mechanical engineering student at IIT Kharagpur. On October 14, 2022, his decomposed body was found in room number C-205 of the Lala Lajpat Rai Hall of Residence of IIT Kharagpur in West Bengal’s Paschim Medinipur district. The college administration said that the student died by suicide while the family claimed that he was murdered. Faizan’s parents filed a writ petition in Calcutta High Court, alleging that their son was murdered.

Speaking to reporters, Rehana Ahmed, mother of Faizan Ahmed said, “We want justice for our son, who was murdered. We are hopeful that Calcutta High Court will give us justice. Today, his body was exhumed and tomorrow he will be taken to Calcutta Medical College for second post-mortem,”.

Justice Rajasekhar Mantha in his order directed that Dr Ajoy Kumar Gupta, a forensic expert appointed by the court for his opinion on the likely cause of death of Ahmed, will conduct the second post-mortem examination at the Medical College and Hospital, Calcutta
in the presence of doctors who conducted the previous autopsy.

Gupta, a retired forensic expert of the state CID, stated in a preliminary report filed before the court that two injury marks on the back of the head of the victim were not mentioned in the first post-mortem examination report.
