Assam: Rhino carcass found in Manas National Park
Guwahati: A carcass of a rhino was found in the Bhuyanpara range of Manas National Park near Rupohi camp in Assam on Saturday.
According to reports, this is the third rhino found dead in Manas National Park in the past two months.
After hearing the news, Filed Director of Manas National Park, Dr Vaibhav C. Mathur reached the spot.
Meanwhile, forest officials are investigating the matter to find out the cause of death of the rhino.
“We are investigating the matter and are considering all possible causes of the rhino’s death, including poaching, natural causes, and conflict with other animals,” said a forest official.
Manas National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to a large population of rhinoceroses. The park has been facing a number of challenges in recent years, including poaching, habitat loss, and human-wildlife conflict.
On August 2, the skeleton of a one-horned rhino was discovered in the Bansbari zone of the national park.
In last few years, rhino poaching has been declined in the state due to the strong surveillance of the forest officials and anti-poaching squad.
“We are taking all slew of measures to to stop rhino poaching in Assam. But in some areas, the poachers took advantage of certain things and poached animals,” said the forest official.
Anti Rhino poaching efforts have yielded spectacular results in the state. There has been no rhino poaching in Assam in year 2022.
The Indian rhinos are listed in Schedule 1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 as an endangered animal. There is an international ban on the trade of rhino horns under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna.
