Assam: Ulfa-I sends extortion note to tea garden in Charaideo
Guwahati: The Ulfa (Independent) has sent an extortion letter to a tea garden located in Sonari area of Charaideo district seeking Rs 72 lakh for the militant organisation’s fund.
Police said that the extortion letter, signed by Ulfa (I) leader Nayan Asom was sent to Manoj Gogoi, the manager of Timon tea estate in Charaideo via WhatsApp on Sunday. The extortion letter sought an amount of Rs 72 lakh for the organisational fund.
No one related to the incident has been apprehended by the police till now and further investigation into the matter is on.
Charaideo SP Yuvraj on Monday said that police has launched an investigation into the matter.
“The extortion letter was send through WhatsApp in the name of Ulfa leader Nayan Asom. The garden management has already registered an FIR and an investigation has been launched. We will crack the case soon,” the SP said.
Meanwhile sources said that the manager Manoj Gogoi has fled the tea estate fearing repercussion from the militant outfit as there has been incidents of abduction of tea garden managers by the militant outfit in the past.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently said that the state government is trying to bring the ULFA (I) led by Paresh Barua to the negotiation table but the progress has been slow.
