With 3,277 new coronavirus cases and 128 casualties in the last 24 hours, India’s tally on Sunday crossed the 62,000-mark while the death toll climbed to 2,109, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
As per the data available at the Health Ministry website, the dreadful infection has affected 62,939 people in India while over 2,100 people have lost their lives. 19,358 people have also been cured from the infection and discharged from hospitals, said the Health Ministry.
The number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra, the worst-hit state, has crossed 20,000-mark while over 770 people have lost their lives. In Gujarat, the coronavirus has affected more than 7,700 people and claimed the lives of 472.
Madhya Pradesh has reported more than 3,600 cases and 215 deaths while the coronavirus has infected over 6,500 people and killed 73 in the national capital Delhi.
The number of coronavirus cases in the country are surging at an alarming rate, especially in Maharashtra and Gujarat. With a sudden spike in coronavirus cases in Gujarat, the a medical team from AIIMS, including its Director Dr Randeep Guleria, was rushed to Ahmedabad on Saturday to take a stock of the situation.
Meanwhile, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan has said the testing capacity for COVID-19 has been ramped up to around 95,000 tests per day and a total of over 15 lakh tests have been conducted so far across hundreds of government and private labs.
He further said that there is no need to anticipate worst case situation with regard to COVID-19 pandemic in India like in developed countries.
“Our fatality rate in the country continues to be around 3.3 per cent and the recovery rate has climbed up to 29.9 per cent, these are very good indicators. The doubling rate for the last 3 days has been about 11 days, for last 7 days it has been 9.9 days,” he said.
