In a historic moment for the Gujarati film industry, Kundaalu (કુંડાળુ), meaning “circle” in Gujarati, emerges as the first feature film crafted in the vibrant Mehsani dialect, bringing the raw, unfiltered essence of rural Gujarat to the silver screen. Presented by 3 Peepul Productions in association with Geet Theatre, this poignant slice-of-life drama, written and directed by debutant filmmaker Rohit Prajapati, is set to captivate audiences with its authentic storytelling and evocative portrayal of life in Mehsana, northern Gujarat. Releasing in cinemas on November 7, 2025, Kundaalu has already garnered critical acclaim, winning seven prestigious awards at the Jaipur International Film Festival (JIFF) 2024.

A Tale of Love, Loss, and Resilience

At its heart, Kundaalu is a moving exploration of rural life, where marriage shapes identity and destiny. The story revolves around Mangu, a young widow from a marginalized family, portrayed with breathtaking depth by Sonaalee Lele Desai, and Vikas, a young man with a speech impediment, brought to life by Swayam in a remarkable debut as both actor and music director. Their lives, marked by struggle and societal constraints, briefly intertwine before tragedy tears them apart. As they navigate loneliness and the search for belonging, Kundaalu poses a poignant question: Can they rise above the weight of tradition to find themselves and each other?

Every character in Kundaalu is meticulously crafted, embodying the struggles, dreams, and inner worlds of rural Gujarat. The men, depicted as custodians of a rigid patriarchal order, uphold traditions that stifle change, while the women, often silenced, reflect resilience and quiet rebellion. The film serves as a mirror to a way of life, revealing how land, climate, and customs shape the psyche of a community, both preserving and confining its people.

A Cinematic Ode to Mehsana’s Soul

Filmed in the picturesque villages of Mehsana, Kundaalu captures the region’s essence through striking visual authenticity and a gripping screenplay. Directed with sensitivity by Rohit Prajapati, a Mehsana native and founder of Geet Theatre, the film embraces classic cinematic techniques—long takes, natural light, and measured pacing—to let its story and performances breathe. Sabyasachi Bhattacharjee’s unembellished cinematography and editing enhance the film’s realism, while the organic sound design immerses viewers in the rhythms of rural life.

The ensemble cast delivers powerhouse performances, with Sonaalee Lele Desai shining as Mangu in a transformative role, supported by young Shilva Panchal’s emotive portrayal of her younger self. Swayam’s nuanced depiction of Vikas, coupled with his musical contributions, marks him as a talent to watch. The supporting cast, including Vaibhav Biniwale as Vikas’ father, Happy Bhavsar Nayak as his mother (in her final role before her passing), Dhruv Pandit as Chaman, Surbhi Bhati as Laali, and Yash Bhagwat as the marriage broker Sura Dalal, adds depth and authenticity to the narrative.

A Soulful Soundtrack Rooted in Tradition

Kundaalu’s music, composed by Vipul Barot and Swayam, is a standout feature, weaving haunting melodies and Mehsani folk traditions into the narrative. From garba and wedding songs to a heartrending marashiya and soulful dohas, the soundtrack features instruments like ravanahatha, dhol, shernai, saarangi, violin, and manjira. Renowned singers such as Bhoomi Trivedi, Vipul Barot, Jay Mohan, Parthi Vyas, Trupti Gadhvi, Trupti Chaudhary, and Swayam himself lend their voices, creating a rich tapestry of sound that elevates the film’s emotional core.

A Milestone for Gujarati Cinema

Kundaalu marks a significant milestone as the first feature film in the Mehsani dialect, offering a fresh perspective on Gujarati cinema. Produced by 3 Peepul Productions, a women-led company founded by Neena Arora, Priya Krishnaswamy, and Suchitra Parikh, the film reflects their commitment to stories rooted in the Indian ethos. With associate producers Mayank Gadhvi, Priyaank Gangwani, and Rohit Prajapati, Kundaalu is a labor of love, marking the debut of much of its cast and crew.

Rohit Prajapati’s directorial vision, informed by his deep connection to Mehsana, infuses Kundaalu with authenticity and emotional resonance. His background as a filmmaker, actor, writer, and theatre practitioner shines through in this raw, compelling debut. 3 Peepul Productions, with its award-winning short film Vishwamitri Villas already making waves globally, establishes itself as a bold new voice in Indian cinema.

A Must-Watch Cinematic Journey

Winner of seven awards at JIFF 2024, Kundaalu is a testament to the power of storytelling that is both universal and deeply rooted in its cultural context. This immersive journey into the heart of rural Gujarat offers a poignant exploration of love, loss, and resilience, brought to life by stellar performances, soulful music, and a vision that celebrates the beauty and complexity of human emotions.
