Guwahati: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) members in Dibrugarh held a 10-hour long hunger strike in protest against the state government’s decision to implement English as the medium of instruction for teaching science and maths in all government run schools from Class 6 onwards.
Recently the AASU had announced a month-long agitation across the state starting from May 28 over the decision of implementing English as the medium of instruction for teaching science and maths in all government run schools from class 6. It has planned a mass protest programme in Guwahati on June 6.
Additionally public awareness programmes will be conducted by the Aasu in every district from June 8 to 14. Similarly, AASU will organise protests in every district headquarters on June 15 followed by bicycle processions in each sub-divisions of the state on June 24.
“Aasu members across the state are observing hunger strike in protest against the decision to implement English as the medium of instruction for teaching science and maths in all government run schools from Class 6 onwards. We have been opposing it since it was announced last year and it won’t be acceptable,” an AASU leader said.
