Madhya Pradesh: Crime Against Tribals Was Up In 2024, But Against SC, It Declined

Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): The number of atrocities against the tribal people in Madhya Pradesh in 2024 was more than what was witnessed in 2023. Criminal cases such as murder of tribal people, attempt to murder and rape increased. Nevertheless, there are efforts to show less percentage of crimes against the SC people.

On the other hand, the number of rapes and the incidents of attempt to murder against the SC people shot up. The number of incidents of atrocity against SC/ST people came to light after the Home Department released statistics of such incidents. In 2023, 45 tribal people were killed, but in 2024, the number shot up to 52.

Similarly, the cases of attempt to murder went up from 26 to 33. The rape cases increased from 345 to 359. The incidents of arson declined from six to four. The number of other crimes has shot up from 2,378 to 2,453.

The number of SC people murdered in the past two years remained the same – 76. On the other hand, the cases of attempt to murder have shot up from 71 to 96. The number of rape cases has also increased from 538 to 557.

Nevertheless, the incidents of arson have declined from 17 to eight. After 2022, there was a decline in cases of crime against SC/ST people, but in 2024, the number of such incidents increased.

According to additional director general of police Ashutosh Rai, since he has recently joined the department, he is unable to say anything about it. A police officer, requesting anonymity, said rise and decline in incidents of crime is part of the game. In comparison to 2022, there has been a decline in the incidents of crime, he said. A single reason cannot be responsible for decline in the incidents of crime, but it is such an issue that requires a detailed discussion, he said.
