Tragic Plane Crash in Ahmedabad Claims Over 300 Lives, Including Former CM Vijay Rupani and Renowned Surat Doctors
Ahmedabad, June 12, 2025: A catastrophic plane crash rocked Ahmedabad this afternoon, claiming the lives of over 100 passengers aboard an Air India flight bound for London. Among the victims were former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Surat’s prominent medical couple, Dr. Hitesh Shah and Dr. Amita Shah, owners of the well-known Smit Surgical Hospital in Rander-Adajan, Surat.The ill-fated flight, which took off from Ahmedabad, was en route to London when it crashed under circumstances yet to be fully investigated. Authorities fear a high casualty toll, with unconfirmed reports suggesting the death of Vijay Rupani, a significant political figure in Gujarat. Adding to the tragedy, Dr. Hitesh Shah and Dr. Amita Shah, respected names in Surat’s medical community, were also on board.The Shah couple was traveling to London to celebrate the 70th birthday of Dr. Hitesh Shah’s sister, a joyous occasion that turned into an unimaginable tragedy. Just moments before boarding, Dr. Amita Shah spoke with her close friend and psychiatrist, Dr. Aarti Mehta, confirming they had completed check-in and were preparing to board. “Hitesh and Amita were excited about the trip,” Dr. Mehta shared, her voice heavy with grief. “Hitesh was a revered figure in Surat’s medical fraternity, and this loss is devastating.”Dr. Hitesh and Dr. Amita Shah were pillars of their community, running Smit Surgical Hospital, a trusted healthcare institution in Surat. The couple leaves behind two sons, Smit and Sneha, both settled in London.
Their journey was meant to be a family reunion, now marred by this heartbreaking disaster.As news of the crash spread, tributes poured in for the victims, with Surat’s residents expressing shock and sorrow over the loss of the beloved doctors. The cause of the crash remains under investigation, with authorities yet to release an official statement.
This tragedy has left Gujarat and the nation in mourning, as families and communities grapple with the sudden loss of so many lives, including leaders and healers who touched countless hearts
