Jetpur (Morbi), July 5: In a serious development in the farmers’ agitation in Jetpur village of Morbi district, prominent farmer leader Nehul Amrutiya (also referred to as Mehulbhai) collapsed unconscious after 18 days of continuous fasting. He was immediately rushed to Jetpur hospital and later shifted to Morbi Civil Hospital as his health condition caused widespread concern among protesters.

Amrutiya, a key face of the Jetpur Khedut Andolan, had been on a symbolic fast protesting the installation of electricity poles and high-tension transmission lines on private farmland without proper consent or adequate compensation. According to updates from the protest site, he suddenly felt dizzy and fell while moving from the stage area to freshen up. His condition is currently described as stable, but overall health has deteriorated due to the prolonged fast.

Key Demands of the Agitation
The ongoing protest highlights several core demands:
Compensation at four times the market rate (following the Rajasthan model) instead of the double market rate currently being offered.
No increase in the base area for poles/towers by even 1 metre without explicit farmer consent.
Formation of a committee that includes farmer representatives to determine fair market rates.

Full advance payment of compensation in one go before any work begins.
Recognition of farmers’ fundamental right to decide on the use of their own land without external interference.
Farmers have criticised recent government decisions as insufficient, calling them a “lollipop” that fails to address their core concerns.

Fast Ends, But Movement Continues

While Nehul Amrutiya’s 18-day fast has now ended on health grounds, the agitation is far from over. Posters and announcements at the site clearly state: “The fast has ended but the movement is not over. This is the beginning, not the end.” Organisers have indicated that Part 3 of the agitation will be more organised, stronger and more widespread.

An appeal has been issued to all supporters to maintain peace, avoid anger or violence, and continue the fight through non-violent and democratic means. Prayers are being sought across the farming community for Amrutiya’s speedy recovery. It has also been indicated that if his condition worsens further, farmers from across Gujarat may gather in large numbers at the site.

Broader Context

The Jetpur protest is part of growing farmer unrest in several parts of Gujarat over power transmission infrastructure being laid across fertile agricultural land, affecting farming operations, land productivity and value. Similar agitations have been reported in other areas, with farmers demanding a complete policy overhaul on compensation and consent.

Local reports and on-ground updates suggest the administration is under pressure to engage meaningfully with the farmers to find a just resolution.
